HD Ratings: Ouch! TVNZ 1 Hurts Rivals
TVNZ 2 and Three’s cookie-cutter scheduling saw both lose to TVNZ 1 on Sunday in the core commercial demographics.
TVNZ 1 swept the night in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos with The Chase, 1 News, Hyundai Country Calendar, Sunday and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces.
Only at 9.30, with the premiere of UK medical drama This Is Going to Hurt, did TVNZ 1 stumble and give up first place to TVNZ 2’s Fast & Furious 7.
F7 averaged 2.1% of 25-54s and 1.7% of 18-49s vs 1.5%/1.2% for Three’s action movie Expendables 2 and 1.9/1.2% for Hurt.
F7 started later than X2 but led it in every quarter-hour segment.
In the battle of the MasterChefs, Three’s home-made version seesawed with TVNZ 2’s import, with each averaging 2.1% of 25-54s and Three narrowly winning the 18-49 race (1.9% vs 1.8%).
HCC and Sunday dwarfed both. The former averaged 7.2%/5.1% and the latter 5.7%/3.6%, helping lead-out Amazing Spaces to average 2.9%/2.0%.
On the smaller HD channels, Eden’s The Imitation Game averaged 0.3%/0.1%, Prime’s The Cleaning Lady and Yellowstone 0.2%/0.1%, Duke’s lifestyle block 0.1% and Whakaata Māori’s Judy & Punch 0.1%/0.0%.
Sky’s Super Rugby Pacific coverage monstered primetime on Saturday, scoring 8.8% of 25-54s and 6.4% of 18-49s while TVNZ 1 dominated much of Friday night.
But in its first Friday broadcast TVNZ 2’s Sunday night flop Britain’s Got Talent proved competitive, with 2.3% of 25-54s and 2.0% of 18-49s.
That was strong enough to overshadow Three’s movie relic xXx: The Next Level, level-peg with TVNZ 1’s The Repair Shop in the 18-49 demo (2.0%) and help lead-out Travel Guides NZ to win with 18-49s.
TVNZ 1’s Thursday line-up was largely solid but 7.30 anchor Your Garden Made Perfect faced tough competition from Three’s 7 Days: the former averaged 3.4%/2.3% and the latter 3.2%/2.4%.
And at 9.30, TVNZ 2’s Filthy House SOS cleaned up against both TVNZ 1’s Coronation Street and Three’s Outsiders.
Note: These overnight ratings exclude viewership of the networks’ +1 SD channels.

What is even more shocking in the 5+ demos that TVNZ 1 dominated the top 15 programmes from 30 May to June 5 with The Chase Bloopers repeat at number 3. With the TVNZ-RNZ merger I hope TVNZ 1 will move away from older skewing focus and adopt programmes similar to ABC TV in Australia and have non-commercial days to strengthen public service obligations, which would give TVNZ 2, Three and Prime fair chance to take advantage as younger audiences go to streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Disney+, Neon and Netflix — proving that TVNZ has an ageism problem.
