HD Ratings: Pirates Ghost of a Chance Against Big Guns

The free-to-air premieres of blockbusters Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol and The Avengers nearly sunk the final of TV One’s NZ Sunday Theatre season, Pirates of the Airwaves.

It averaged 2.4% – 4.0% of the major demographics, compared to Nancy Wake: The White Mouse delivering 3.9% – 7.3% in the same slot the previous week.

But Pirates’ competition was fiercer, with The Avengers amassing 4.7% – 10.4% and M:I 4.8% – 8.5%.

Avengers won its slot outright among household shoppers with kids (peaking at 13.0%) and seesawed in the other key demos with M:I, essentially winning its first half and losing its second.

Ultimately, the superheroes came off second-best against the combined clout of TV3’s M:I and lead-in The X Factor Australia (7.1% – 12.6%), which helped the network to win the night in all the key demos.

However, while the talent quest was largely several ratings points ahead of TV2’s sitcoms, TV One’s Sunday dominated the 7.00 hour, with 8.4% – 11.5%.

Its lead-out, Radar Across the Pacific (5.3% – 6.5%), was down sharply on its premiere the previous week.

Sunday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 6.1 rating/19.9 share; TV2, 5.7 rating/18.6 share; TV3, 6.5 rating/21.4 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 5.4 rating/19.1 share; TV2, 5.0 rating/18.0 share; TV3, 6.4 rating/22.9 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 7.1 rating/20.8 share; TV2, 5.9 rating/17.1 share; TV3, 7.2 rating/21.1 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 7.3 rating/18.7 share; TV2, 9.8 rating/25.0 share; TV3, 10.8 rating/27.5 share.

TV One’s Hyundai Country Calendar (6.1% – 9.5%) again was top dog on Saturday, although the new SD season of Location Location Location opened strongly, with 3.4% – 5.7%, midway through TV2’s repeat of Sister Act (4.0% – 6.7%).

Location’s appeal helped to lift lead-out Undercover Boss (2.8% – 5.3%) and Vera (0.8% – 2.1%) while The Secret Lives of Dancers rated 2.4% – 3.0% and Blue Bloods 2.5% – 3.5%.

On Friday, The Voice Kids Australia was a huge hit with HHS/k, averaging 18.4% and 13.0% – 14.0% of the other key demos.

That helped Miss Congeniality to rate 6.2% – 9.8% while The Graham Norton Show, sandwiched in-between, could muster only 5.8% – 6.0%.

I had a feeling prior to kick off in the game between M:I/GP vs The Avengers. I was right. Everyone waited around to see the Kremlin blow up. Give the public what they want and they’ll turn out.
