HD Ratings: Poor Starter for Nothing Trivial
TV critic Jane Clifton in today’s Dominion Post declared “few light drama series are more entertaining than Nothing Trivial, back last night on TV One …
“Like all the great ensemble cast series – Friends, Cold Feet – this is a gang the viewer subconsciously longs to join.”
Not any more, it seems. The third-season premiere lost to Prime’s third-ranked Under the Dome in most of the key demos on Wednesday.
It averaged ratings of 3.2% – 5.3% compared to Dome’s 3.5% – 5.0%, with only household shoppers narrowly opting for the Kiwi drama.
However, with viewers 5+, Trivial was easily tops: 5.8% versus 4.2%.
Dome was down on last week’s premiere as was Trivial on last year’s second-season premiere, which averaged 3.4% – 7.9%.
That was in an 8.30 Sunday slot but continues this year’s ratings slump for NZ drama (The Almighty Johnsons, Go Girls, The Blue Rose, Harry).
Yet it was an even worse night for another HD newcomer on TV One: episode two of Scandal, which averaged only 1.8% – 2.6%.
That was well behind TV2’s Devious Maids (3.8% – 6.4%), which improved over previous weeks.
It even lost to TV3’s Breakout Kings (2.5% – 3.9%), except in the 25 – 54 demo.
3rd Degree had one of its better nights, with its housing policy debate (5.5% – 6.6%), while The Block NZ (11.3% – 14.9%) largely demolished TV2’s HD sitcoms.
But at 8.30 The Big Bang Theory (9.6% – 12.7%) and Cougar Town (7.1% – 9.5%) were indestructible.
