HD Ratings: Roseanne Not So Rosy

Thursday’s Roseanne recorded season-low ratings.

The hit reboot that Three fast-tracked from the US averaged 2.8% of the network’s target audience, 25-54 year-olds, compared to 3.5% the previous week.

Lead-out Modern Family also slipped week-on-week, from 3.6% to 2.9%, while the movie, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, averaged 3.4% versus 3.7% for Robin Hood on May 10.

The comedies faced stiffer competition from TVNZ 1’s Design Junkies, which improved from 4.8% of 25-54s the previous week to 5.7%.

TVNZ 2’s Police Ten 7 also rated lower in this demographic — 6.5% vs 7.2% — but stablemate Motorway Patrol was up a point, to 6.6%.

First Dates NZ also got a boost, from 3.9% to 4.7%, while lead-out This Is Us improved from 1.4% to 2.3% but still lost to The Mummy.

TVNZ 1’s Mrs Brown’s Boys was steady, on 3.1%, and the extra-long Coronation Street gained nearly a point to average 2.0% over 90 minutes.

Despite Roseanne’s decline, the sitcom’s been a solid investment for Three and has helped to hike Modern Family’s following.

But TVNZ 2 continues to own Thursdays, with Shortland Street and two hours of reality fare winning all the core commercial age demos.

The network’s biggest weakness is This Is Us, which, despite re-runs of season one and twice-weekly broadcasts of season two, isn’t gaining traction.

Wednesday’s episode averaged only 1.2% of TVNZ’s target audience, 18-49 year-olds, and 1.3% of 25-54s.

It was thumped by TVNZ 1’s Coronation Street, which averaged a time slot-winning 3.2% and 3.7% respectively.

Three’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace averaged 3.3% of 25-54s compared to 6.1% for My Kitchen Rules, 4.2% for The Big Bang Theory and 3.2% for Mom.

The sitcoms lost to TVNZ 1’s Prince Harry’s Story: Four Royal Weddings, which averaged 5.0% to win the 8.30 hour off the back of Location Location Location’s 4.2%.

On Tuesday at 8.30, TVNZ 1 narrowly prevailed in the 25-54 demo with Class of Mum and Dad (3.6%) topping TVNZ 2’s The Resident (3.5%) and Three’s NCIS (2.8%) but among 18-49s the hospital drama edged ahead.

Resident lead-out Grey’s Anatomy won the 9.30 hour among 18-39s  but TVNZ 1’s 20/20 dominated in the other key demos.

I know I’m off topic but I just want to say that I can highly recommend getting an Oculus Go as it is absolutely brilliant, it’s so awesome for watching Netflix as you get a nice comfy couch to sit in and a nice BIG TV to watch your favourite TV show or movie.I also am blown away by virtual reality as it really does feel like you are really there so to me 3D is now dead, it’s virtual reality all the way. When is Peter Jackson going to do a virtual reality version of Lord of the Rings? 🙂

  2. You’re never off-topic, Trevor. I’ve tried similar devices in the past and always been disappointed by the ‘screen-door’ effect of the display not having high enough resolution. Were you aware of the pixels?

  3. I own the Samsung Gear VR and I don’t use it just because of the screen-door effect. I can definitely see the pixels, and tried watching YouTube on it and it’s like watching standard definition. It really puts me off!!

  4. Hi Philip, are the Royal Wedding ratings going to be released soon?

  5. Probably mid-morning tomorrow. But I may not be able to access them until later in the week, so keep your eyes peeled on the NZ Herald and Stuff websites.

  6. Yes, sadly you do sometimes notice the pixels but being able to see around you is really something. It’s clever how it makes you feel like you are actually moving even though you just sitting down in a chair. I really love Celtic Music Dreams on YouTube, WOW and also the promo for It where you go into the gutter, it’s so creepy. Thanks, Philip 🙂

  7. Thanks, Philip. I will wait for your post.
