HD Ratings: RWC Scores for TVNZ
Unexpected live Rugby World Cup coverage on Duke, because of streaming problems on Spark, provided a Sunday night ratings windfall for the TVNZ channel.
The first of three games scored above-average ratings while the others largely won their time slots in the core commercial demographics.
The second game averaged 6.8% of 25-54 year-olds and the third, 4.2%; in the 18-49 demo, they respectively averaged 5.4% and 2.9%.
Their last-minute scheduling crushed the competition, with TVNZ 1’s The Kick averaging 1.9% of 25-54s; TVNZ 2’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, 4.6%; and Three’s Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, 1.1%.
In the 18-49 demo, the respective channel ratings were 1.3%, 4.0% and 1.1%.
But TVNZ 1 dominated earlier, with 1 News and Hyundai Country Calendar winning their slots while Celebrity Treasure Island out-rated Married at First Sight NZ in all the core demos except household shoppers with kids.
Prime’s Making NZ resurfaced with a 25-54 average of 1.0%, ahead of the premiere of The Clinton Affair averaging 0.5%.
Maori TV’s free-to-air premiere of The Lobster averaged 0.4% of 25-54s and 0.2% of 18-49s.
Duke won the night’s biggest share of 18-39s and lost the 18-49 race by only two-tenths of a ratings point to TVNZ 2 — which also won with HHS while TVNZ 1 had the most 25-54s.
On Saturday TVNZ 1’s rugby-driven line-up led all the other channels except in the 18-39 demo, where TVNZ 2’s movies, James and the Giant Peach and The Shawshank Redemption, proved the pulling power of evergreens.
The story was the same on Friday, with TVNZ 1’s RWC opening ceremony and first game of the tournament dwarfing everything else.
On Thursday, TVNZ 1’s MasterChef Australia won its slot in all the key demos except 18-39, who opted for TVNZ 2’s Police Ten 7 and Highway Patrol.
Three’s Battleship finished third, with 2.6% of 25-54s and 2.4% of 18-49s.

I see that Prime can be LIVE streamed and in HD through the new Vodafone TV box but can’t through the Freeview Smartvu box. What’s the logic behind that? Is Sky just anti anything Freeview?
I imagine it is, Leo. Freeview is a competitor for Sky, especially with the release of its MySky rival, the streaming-capable Freeview recorder. Vodafone, which has such a close association with Sky that the two wanted to merge, will be streaming Sky’s satellite channels, which include Prime HD. Freeview’s recorder and streaming device is limited to what’s on its sat/DTT platform.
I just find all this exclusion puzzling as Prime loses out on being on as many platforms as possible to reach a wide audience and thus increase its share. Doesn’t the new CEO see this as a positive? Thanks for getting back to me and I hope there will be a post about the new Vodafone TV box.
