HD Ratings: Shorty Surges in 5.1

The first episode of Shortland Street to be broadcast in 5.1 — and also its last for the year — reverberated in the ratings.

In fact, Wednesday’s season finale was two episodes stitched together.

This strategy, coupled with a mid-week send-off rather than the traditional Friday farewell, saw this year’s Christmas cliffhanger rate sharply higher than last year’s half-hour.

It averaged 14.5% – 20.3% of the key demographics — adults 18-39, 18-49, 25-54, household shoppers with kids — compared to 11.5% – 12.1% in 2012.

The season finale was up about 3-5 points in each of the age demos, and eight points higher with HHS.

According to the NZ Herald, “The cliffhanger episode caps off a successful year for the show, which enjoyed a 45% average audience share in the key demographic, to the end of November – its second highest share in the demo since 2007, behind only last year’s 20th anniversary celebrations.”

It set TV2 up to win the night with its Christmas-themed sitcoms, against which TV One’s and TV3’s fare collapsed (although ratings were low across the board, even for TV2’s comedies).

In other HD ratings news of note:

  • NZ’s Got Talent ended its run on Sunday, with 6.7% – 12.9% — enough to easily win its slot but well down on last year’s 13.3% – 21.4%
  • TV3’s network premiere of Safe House (3.8% – 6.6%) on Monday was walloped by TV2’s Yes Man (7.5% – 10.1R%)
  • Monday’s The Middle rated exceptionally strongly, averaging 19.0% of HHS on the back of Shortland Street’s 23.8%
  • TV3’s umpteenth re-run of Meet the Fockers on Sunday averaged 7.4% – 8.8% against TV2’s The Santa Clause’s (6.5% – 10.3%) and was ahead of it in the age demos
  • TV One’s Showtime barely improved on its second outing, with Saturday’s episode averaging only 1.2% – 3.3% (from this weekend, it will switch slots with Paul O’Grady For the Love of Dogs).

Great news for Shorty’s ratings and not so much for NZGT. Philip: last night during the Shortland Street cliffhanger, TV2’s new season promos had Scandal as one of the shows. Does this mean it’s migrating to TV2 next year?

  2. Yes, it does. TVNZ at last has woken up to it being a better fit on 2 than One. The only thing is it’s probably too late to reverse its ratings woes …

  3. Well, finally they see sense! I’m wondering whether or not they’re going to repeat season 1 and half of season 2 on TV2 to get viewers who did not see it on TV One up to speed. I do hope it’s not too late for Scandal and am optimistic its new home on TV2 lifts its ratings and by pairing it with Grey’s or Revenge next year should help bed in the programme. They could also finally launch Nashville onto our screens, which is still be scheduled!
