HD Ratings: State of Origin a Winner for Three
Three’s live State of Origin telecast on Wednesday won its slot in the core commercial demographics but rated lower than its lead-in, crime drama LA’s Finest.
The first half averaged 2.8% of 25-54 year-olds and 2.5% of 18-49s; the second half, 1.8% / 1.4%.
It was the first State of Origin game to screen on Three in 19 years; more recently, the competition could only be viewed free-to-air, on Prime, following its live broadcast on Sky (the rest of the series will air exclusively on Sky Sport).
While by no means a gangbusters result, it easily out-rated everything else on free-to-air TV and topped Sky’s own coverage, which averaged 1.5% / 0.9%.
Only in the 25-54 demo were Three and Sky neck-and-neck, and that was in the middle stretch of the coverage.
Three also owned the rest of the night, with its hour of Bondi Rescue averaging an unbeatable 5.2% of 25-54s and 4.4% of 18-49s.
TVNZ 2’s two-hour MasterChef Australia averaged 3.4% / 2.3% to trail TVNZ 1’s Beat the Chasers (3.7% / 2.8%).
At 8.30, LA’s Finest averaged 3.5% / 2.5%, to seesaw with the last half-hour of MasterChef in the 25-54 demo while TVNZ 1’s Location Location Location finished third with averages of 2.4% / 2.0%.
At 9.30, TVNZ 2’s Patriot Brains had the edge over TVNZ 1’s Coronation Street in both demos.
Three narrowly won the night with the biggest key demo shares, beating TVNZ 1 by two-tenths of a point in the 25-54 race and six-tenths in the 18-49 contest.

That’s interesting news. I wonder if Discovery will go after more live sports for Three 🙂
In October Apple TV+ have got a new show coming in October called Invasion which is about an alien invasion. The trailer looks incredible and also stars wonderful Sam Neil. Think I will have to get Apple TV+ 🙂
Expensive content for a 3 share?
Thanks, Trevor, you pipped my post. Apple TV+ is a great service. Affordable at $8.99 a month and what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality with series like The Morning Show, Servant, See and For All Mankind. Streaming quality’s also excellent.
The actual share was much higher, Mike. 2.8% of 25-54s earned Three a 19.7% share of that demo in the first half and a 24.1% share in the second.
Thanks Philip. I definitely think I will be getting Apple TV+, the first week is free as well 🙂
Its 3% of the viewing population. Share across broadcast television is such perverse marketing speak and only relevant if one MUST put advertising on broadcast TV. At the end of the day only 3% of 1.7m people aged 25-54 watched – thats just 50,000 people.
It certainly is, Trevor. When I trialled it, I had to renew for another month because I couldn’t get through all the good stuff in time!
Couldn’t get on with For All Mankind – a bit too much in the vein of The Man in the High Castle. But other series I have really enjoyed such as See (good news on S02 and S03!), The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, Trying, with The Mosquito Coast, Losing Alice, Lisey’s Story and Servant still to get stuck into. Sadly gave up on Defending Jacob, also Truth be Told. Invasion also looks good fun. I agree with other posters here – the quality of Apple production and quality of the broadcast/stream is also really top notch.
I watched the first episode of For All Mankind, not sure about that one but I do love Ted Lasso, it’s so funny 🙂
I’m sure Phil will be along soon with news on Season 2 of Ted Lasso – I dont believe it’s far away … Phil?
Hey, Rosco. Ted bounces back on July 23.
That’s good to hear about Ted. I finished season one of Home Before Dark and really enjoyed it. Season 2 must have just started with only one episode so far 🙂
