HD Ratings: Sunday Night Not so Heroic for TV2

TV2’s super hero hours stumbled in the ratings on Sunday but still out-muscled their HD rivals.

Agents of SHIELD averaged 6.8% – 11.2% of the major demographics and The Tomorrow People, 4.5% – 8.0%.

These results were down sharply on the previous week, when SHIELD drew 9.6% – 13.8% and its stablemate 7.9% – 12.1%.

But they were still well ahead of the competition: TV3’s The Blacklist averaged 5.5% – 7.0% (compared to 5.3% – 8.2% the previous week) and Hawaii Five-O 2.7% – 5.1%, which was a big bounce back from last week’s 0.9% – 1.8% (although this didn’t help House of Cards’ cause: 0.6% – 1.1%).

Over on TV One, Offspring at 8.30 also improved, from 2.8% – 5.9% to 3.7% – 6.8%, as did lead-out Betrayal, which was up from 0.7% – 2.8% to 1.4% – 3.3%.

MasterChef NZ averaged 4.2% – 10.3% against The Great Food Race’s 4.5% – 7.4%, with the gap between the two narrowing as each neared its conclusion.

Indeed, in the last quarter-hour segments, Race overtook or challenged MasterChef.

Both were up against TV2’s movie Hoodwinked, which averaged 5.4% – 10.2%.

Sunday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 6.0 rating/21.9 share; TV2, 6.2 rating/22.7 share; TV3, 4.8 rating/17.6 share
  • Adults 18-39: TV One, 4.4 rating/17.4 share; TV2, 6.6 rating/25.9 share; TV3, 4.6 rating/18.3 share
  • Adults 25-54: TV One, 7.0 rating/22.9 share; TV2, 6.4 rating/21.1 share; TV3, 5.5 rating/17.9 share
  • HHS: TV One, 8.7 rating/24.1 share; TV2, 9.7 rating/27.2 share; TV3, 7.3 rating/20.4 share.

Saturday’s return of MasterChef MasterClass started poorly, averaging only 2.3% -3.2% on the back of Hyundai Country Calendar’s 4.3% – 6.6%.

The final of The Doctor Blake Mysteries justified its run being curtailed, with just 0.6% – 3.8% opposite CSI: NY’s 3.1% – 3.7%.

The latter’s lead-out, Hannibal, drew 1.0% – 1.9% against Sherlock’s 0.3% – 1.7%, with both being resoundingly beaten by TV2’s network HD premiere of The Inbetweeners Movie (4.0% – 5.8%) on the back of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (4.5% – 6.7%).

TV2’s penultimate episode of The Bachelor easily won Friday’s 7.30 hour but its HD premiere of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows quickly gave up its gains.

The Aussie dating contest averaged 6.8% – 9.5% of the key demographics opposite HD rivals The Simpsons (3.9% – 4.3%) and How I Met Your Mother (3.9% – 4.8%).

Although Shadows (3.3% – 4.1%) started strongly, it couldn’t sustain its lead-in opposite The Graham Norton Show (5.9% – 8.4%), 7 Days (6.5% – 7.8%) and Jono and Ben at Ten (5.9% – 6.7%).

But TV2 dominated Thursday night, with Arrow averaging 6.1% – 11.8% opposite CSI’s 1.5% – 4.6% and Doc Martin’s 3.3% – 6.5%.

TV3’s Cadbury Dream Factory languished on 2.6% – 4.0% against George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces (5.3% – 9.4%) and Motorway Patrol’s 9.4% – 15.2%.
