HD Ratings: Supergirl Not Super Enough
TV2’s new supersized Sunday line-up still couldn’t topple TV3’s dynamic duo of The Block NZ: Villa Wars and Grand Designs NZ.
Because of these shows’ pulling power, TV3 won the night in three of the four core commercial demographics: 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54.
The Block averaged 8.5% – 10.8% of these demos against Supergirl’s 5.8% – 6.8% while Grand Designs’ 9.0% – 10.9% topped the opening hour of TV2’s network movie premiere of World War Z.
The movie went on to win the rest of its slot, averaging 6.8% – 7.7% of the key age demos.
Earlier, the return of Thunderbirds Are Go (2.1% – 2.5%) and the season premiere of Star War Rebels (2.0% – 2.5%) finished third against the rival news hours while The Muppets scarcely brought the house down with its 3.9% – 4.5% debut.
These shows rated higher among household shoppers with kids but still were out-rated by TV3’s, although the race was much tighter in this demo between Supergirl (11.2%) and The Block (12.5%).
TV1’s Life Story (5.2% – 7.1%) was competitive with Supergirl in the age demos but the return of Meet the Midwife (2.4% – 4.4%) and Love Child (0.8% – 3.5%) came a distant third in all four key demos.
TV2’s world TV premiere of Kiwi horror hoot What We Do in the Shadows on Saturday was cursed by TV3’s network movie premiere of Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters.
The latter averaged 3.9% – 5.6% of the four major demos and the former, a shockingly low 2.0% – 2.5% — even though it had a stronger lead-in, with Mars Need Moms (2.8% – 4.7%) trouncing the free-to-air premiere of ParaNorman (2.0% – 2.4%).
TV1 had an exceptionally strong Saturday with One News, Hyundai Country Calendar and Slow Train Through Africa With Griff Rhys Jones winning their slots across the core demos.
TV3 also scored on Friday, when The Graham Norton Show, 7 Days and Funny Girls blitzed the competition, especially TV2 flops Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris and RuPaul’s Drag Race, which has been pulled mid-season.

Don’t flag our new Sunday series of shows because Supergirl will do way better with Thunderbirds, Star Wars and The Muppets as a perfect lead-in, so don’t bag this new series – it has just started.
Not surprised. Reality rules in NZ.
