HD Ratings: The Resident Recovers

TVNZ 2’s new Tuesday night hospital drama The Resident has started to stabilise off the back off time-slot winning lead-in My Kitchen Rules.

Last week’s episode won its slot with 3.7% of 18-39 year-olds and was competitive in the other core commercial demographics, with 3.8% of 25-54s, 3.0% of 18-49s and 4.3% of household shoppers with kids.

It was roughly twice as popular as lead-out Grey’s Anatomy, out-rated Three’s NCIS by a wide margin and lost narrowly to the final of TVNZ 1’s Rich House, Poor House in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos.

The Resident was steady among HHS/k but made big week-on-week gains in the core age demos.

It will be interesting to see if tonight’s episode can maintain this growth in the face of new competition on TVNZ 1, the premiere of Class of Mum and Dad (which went to air last month in the UK).

Said The Daily Mail of Channel 4’s latest social experiment, which sends parents back to primary school: “How the documentary will fill six episodes is not clear, since it was already running out of material in the first hour — padded with children’s interviews, which are cute in small doses but nauseating when overdone.”

NCIS stablemate SVU fared better than its lead-in to win the 9.30 hour with 25-54s and 18-49s but lost to Grey’s Anatomy in the other key demos.

MKR remains a star performer for TVNZ 2, easily winning its slot across the board last Tuesday with key demo averages of 4.5% – 11.2% compared to 3.5% – 3.7% for Three’s Grand Designs UK (which, nonetheless, is up sharply on predecessor American Idol).

Prime’s cooking rival, The Great British Bake Off, averaged only 1.2% of 25-54s ahead of The Seventies’ 1.3% but TGBB was up nearly a point on the previous week’s (both series end their runs tonight).
