HD Ratings: Three’s Beasts More Fantastic Than TVNZ 2’s
Three’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom won the fantastic beasts face-off in the core commercial demographics on Sunday.
It averaged 2.5% of 25-54 year-olds and 2.0% of 18-49s vs 2.0% / 1.3% respectively for TVNZ 2’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Prime’s rival premiere of the feature-length documentary, The Day Sports Stood Still, averaged just 0.1% of each major demo.
Amazingly, Three’s 7.30 Friday re-run of Jurassic Park III rated higher with 25-54s (2.8%) and was comparable in the 18-49 demo (1.8%) against Wipeout’s 2.0% / 1.4% and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown’s 2.0% / 1.4%.
Three’s Sunday night sequel benefitted from a stronger lead-in than Fantastic Beasts, with The Block NZ averaging 4.9% / 3.7% vs MasterChef Australia’s 3.5% / 3.2%.
MasterChef also struggles from a weak lead-in, with Sarah Beeney’s Renovate Don’t Relocate averaging only 0.3% / 0.1% of the key demos, down from the premiere’s 1.1% / 0.7% the previous week.
Otherwise, the last night of TVNZ 1’s Olympics coverage dominated, losing to only the last half hour of The Block in both demos.
TVNZ 1 won the night with 30+ shares of the core demos while Three finished well ahead of TVNZ 2 with 20+ shares.
But on Saturday, Three could average shares of just 5.5% of 25-54s and 5.1% of 18-49s, virtually half those of TVNZ 2’s and a sixth of TVNZ 1’s.

Since TVNZ success with Tokyo this year, I wonder if TVNZ is going to air the free to air coverage of the Beijing games next year alongside Sky?
