HD Ratings: Reality Titans in Tight Tussle

Three’s The Block NZ: Firehouse largely lost to TVNZ 2’s My Kitchen Rules on Monday night but out-rated it on Sunday.
Only one-tenth of a rating point separated them in the 25-54 and 18-49 demographics on Monday, with TBNZ edging out MKR in the former but losing in the other core commercial demographics.
But on Sunday it scored a comprehensive win over MKR in all the key demos while Three’s movie, Deadpool, averaged twice as many 25-54 and 18-49 viewers as TVNZ 2’s unmpteenth repeat of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
TVNZ 1’s Cold Case rated robustly, averaging 4.8% of 25-54s and 3.5% of 18-49s, and even won the 8.30 hour among household shoppers with kids (5.9%).
But Three easily won Sunday night in all the top demos while its line-up of TBNZ, Westside and Special Victims Unit carried Monday in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos.
Duke’s fast-tracking of the latest Top Gear series scarcely made a ratings dent on Sunday, averaging just 0.6% of 18-49s and 0.8% of 25-54s.
Prime’s International Rugby League coverage on Saturday scored solid ratings, averaging 3.5% of 25-54s, while TVNZ 2’s Toy Story beat Three’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in all the core demos except HHS/k.
But Three’s Back to the Future II out-rated TVNZ 2’s Angels & Demons across the board.
Some normality returned to free-to-air Friday nights, when Three’s Graham Norton Show and 7 Days dominated their slots in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos after losing to TVNZ 2’s Game of Games and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown the previous week.
But TVNZ 2’s line-up was preferred by 18-39s and HHS/k — although Sky Sports trumped all the FTA competition with its Super Rugby coverage.
And TVNZ 2’s Wife Swap was back on top on Thursday, when it won the 8.30 hour in the key demos, while Three’s premiere of The Titan Games came up short against George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and TVNZ 2’s Police Ten 7 and Highway Patrol.
But from 9.30, the second half of Three’s repeat of Jurassic Park made the rest of the competition extinct.

It’s a shame Top Gear rated so poorly, the new presenters are quite good. Hopefully word spreads and the numbers improve.
I thought that Prime had the rights to Top Gear. Since when did TVNZ get them?
I don’t know when TVNZ did the deal. It made no announcement and didn’t even highlight in its media kits that the new season was starting. The only clue to TVNZ acquiring the rights was the back catalogue Top Gear specials Duke’s been running for the last few weeks, which would have part of the package for the latest season. Top Gear is a prestigious BBC title and its licensing invariably comes with a raft of add-ons that broadcasters have to screen.
