HD Ratings: TV3 Gains From TV One Win

The two-hour season finale of MasterChef NZ won its time period in all the key demographics but may have opened the door for The Blacklist to beat Agents of SHIELD for the first time.

TV One’s cooking hit averaged 7.6% – 12.5% and was most popular with TV One’s target audience, 25-54 year-olds.

As the final built to its conclusion, viewers in most demos switched over from TV2’s SHIELD and TV3’s The Blacklist to see who was going to win, with SHIELD suffering the steepest fall-off.

Despite having a higher lead-in with Finding Nemo (6.7% – 10.0%), SHIELD averaged a season low of 4.8% – 5.9% while The Blacklist scored a higher-than-usual 6.3% – 8.4% — and that was against unusually tough competition on TV One (the previous week the season finale of Offspring averaged 5.9% – 8.7%).

The Blacklist’s popularity didn’t improve lead-out Hawaii Five-O’s appeal, which averaged only 2.4% – 3.2% against TV2’s The Tomorrow People (3.7% – 5.6%) and TV One’s Mr Selfridge (2.5% – 4.9%).

While the department store drama rated better post-MasterChef than it ever did at 8.30 on Thursday, the audience it inherited quickly declined after the first quarter-hour.

There also was good news for TV3 at 7.00, where the temporary return of The Simpsons to its old stamping ground averaged 4.5% – 5.6%, which was in line with its Friday ratings of 4.0% – 6.0%.

Week on week, TV One was the BIG winner, enjoying a rare clean sweep of Sunday’s key demos, while TV3 also gained at TV2’s expense.

Sunday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 9.2 rating/27.1 share; TV2, 6.1 rating/18.0 share; TV3, 5.8 rating/17.0 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 8.2 rating/26.3 share; TV2, 5.9 rating/19.0 share; TV3, 5.4 rating/17.4 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 11.1 rating/29.4 share; TV2, 5.8 rating/15.4 share; TV3, 6.6 rating/17.4 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 10.9 rating/26.4 share; TV2, 7.9 rating/19.1 share; TV3, 7.9 rating/19.0 share.

On Saturday, TV3’s series finale of CSI: NY averaged 2.9% – 6.0% on the back of Ice Road Truckers’ 3.7% – 4.1% and ahead of State of Play’s 1.9% – 4.6%, which was more popular with the 25-54 demo and household shoppers with kids than TV One’s Endeavour (0.7% – 2.0%) and TV2’s 50/50 (3.1% – 3.4%).

The night’s biggest drawcards were Hyundai Country Calendar (5.8% – 9.4%) and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (4.1% – 8.5%) while the final of MasterChef MasterClass mustered 2.7% – 4.5%.

TV2 dominated Friday evening with Shortland Street (9.5% – 16.5), and re-runs of The Middle (6.8% – 13.3%) and The Big Bang Theory (8.1% – 13.4%).

But TV2’s premiere of Joyful Noise (4.8% – 8.9%) was thrashed in all the key demos except HHS/k by TV3’s The Graham Norton Show (6.9% – 9.0%) and Chopper in the Shitlist (4.5% – 6.3%).

The Blacklist is starting to get very interesting.

  2. Blacklist is great. Wouldn’t miss James Spader for a cooking show or super people running around wearing their underwear over their trousers!
