HD Ratings: TV3 Manages 25-54 Win on TV One’s Night
TV3’s series premiere of The Night Manager narrowly won the 8.30 hour on Sunday in the network’s target demographic, 25-54 year-olds.
The premium BBC drama, which once would have been the Sunday night preserve of TV One, averaged a 4.9 rating/19 channel share.
It also out-rated TV One’s Blindspot in the 18-49 demo with a 4.0 rating/18 share average.
Blindspot’s ratings took a hit across the board, averaging only 3.6% of 18-49s and 4.8% of 25-54s.
TV2’s repeat of Bruce Almighty dominated with 18-49s (3.9 rating/20.8 share) and challenged The Night Manager for 25-54 eyeballs (4.4 rating/19.3 share), with the two-seesawing.
The John Le Carre adaptation opened with 5.7% of 25-54s but closed with 4.8%, slipping below this as viewers drifted off to the Jim Carrey comedy and Blindspot.
TV3’s House Rules won the 7.30 hour in all the core commercial demographics and helped the network to win the night with 18-49s and 25-54s, despite the season premiere of Live at the Apollo finishing third at 9.30 (except among 18-39s).
TV3 won Saturday night with 18-49s and household shoppers with kids, TV One with 25-54s and TV2 with 18-39s.
TV3’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade won with 25-54s while its lead-out, Lord of War, was competitive in this demo and 18-49s.
But otherwise TV2’s Confessions of a Shopaholic and The Guardian held sway.
Prime’s HD series premiere of Partners in Crime opened softly, with only a 1.0 rating/3.8 share of 25-54s.
TV3 had another 25-54 win on Friday, when The Graham Norton Show and 7 Days dominated three of the core demos and Fail Army won all four, but couldn’t stop TV2 topping the night in the other chief demos.
Viewers rediscovered TV3 Lost & Found on Thursday, when the season premiere won three of the four key demos but narrowly lost to TV One’s Love It Or List It among 25-54s (6.3 rating/21.1 share vs 6.4 rating/22 share).
The season finale of The X-Files finished third at 9.30 while its lead-out, Arrow, was beaten by TV3’s season premiere of Bodyshockers in all the top demos.
But the popularity of TV2’s Shortland Street and its reality shows ensured the network won the night in every main demo except HHS/k.
SS and the network’s comedy block also made the network unassailable on Wednesday, although TV3 had good news earlier in the day when Paul Henry narrowly beat Breakfast for the first time among 25-54s.
SS and The Big Ward won the 7.00 hour in all the key demos on Tuesday but TV2’s Filthy Rich finished second to TV One’s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds and seesawed with TV3’s NCIS.
The 9.30 hour was keenly contested, with TV One’s The Art of Recovery, TV2’s How to Get Away With Murder and TV3’s SVU largely level pegging, except in the HHS/k race, where HTGAWM was way out in front.
TV2 steamrolled the competition on Monday with SS, The Middle, Grandfathered, Filthy Rich and The Walking Dead.

Wow, that’s the first time Breakfast has been beaten since its inception in 1997. TVNZ need to tread carefully or they could end up like NBC’s Today and trail ABC’s Good Morning America after Today’s unstoppable 18 year winning streak finally ended.
I my eyes NBC Today went down when they dropped the John Williams opening theme.
TV3’s Night Manager appears to be severely cut: ep1 played for 42m v 57m off iTunes, ep2 44m v 55m.
Good point! It’s an old trick that commercial broadcasters in NZ and Australia have favoured: cutting BBC hours to fit their “commercial hours”. TVNZ stopped doing it years ago after massive bad press. TV3’s practice hasn’t been as prevalent, largely because of its limited UK content. The same will be true of The Hunt, although the edits won’t be as severe as each ep is closer to 50mins than 60mins. Have asked TV3 for comment.
