HD Ratings: Viewers Switch Off Gogglebox

Three’s new watching-the-viewers series, Gogglebox, proved to be anything but gangbusting on Wednesday.

The 8.30 premiere averaged 3.5% of the network’s target audience, 25-54 year-olds, to finish well behind TVNZ 1’s MasterChef Australia (5.1%) and TVNZ 2’s re-run of The Hangover (4.6%).

Moreover, this rating was inflated by the bumper lead-in from The Block NZ.

It averaged 6.9% for the hour but peaked with 7.5% in its last quarter hour, which meant Gogglebox hit the ground running with 5.9% in its first quarter hour.

But over the hour its 25-54 viewership more than halved, to 2.2%.

The decline was even steeper in the other core commercial demographics: 18-49, from 5.1% to 1.6%; 18-39, from 3.6% to 0.7%; household shoppers with kids, from 8.2% to 3.0%.

Clearly, viewers felt the same towards Gogglebox as Stuff critic Eleanor Black: “Mostly the programme is pretty boring, and with so much truly excellent TV on offer, I can’t see the appeal.”

As Googlebox continued, ratings for both MasterChef and The Hangover climbed, with the latter winning its last hour in all the key demos.

While Googlebox averaged only slightly fewer 25-54 viewers than the previous week’s NCIS: Los Angeles (3.8%), the latter averaged higher quarter-hour ratings and helped lead-out Hawaii Five-O to win its 9.30 slot with a 2.7 rating.

But while last night’s H5O averaged only 1.7%, it faced much tougher competition from The Hangover than it did from last Wednesday’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (1.9%).

Shifting The Big Bang Theory from 8.30 to 8.00 to accommodate The Hangover cost the sitcom viewers week-on-week because it had to face off against The Block instead of NCIS: LA.

It averaged fewer 25-54 and 18-49 viewers than American Housewife did in the same slot.

In the end, Three went from winning the night a week earlier in the 18-49, 25-54 and HHS/k demos to losing it all in all three to TVNZ 2.

Can broadcast TV get any worse than a show about people watching TV?
