HDTV Movie Premieres: August 7-13

The Proposal: Sky Movies, 8.30pm Sunday.

Expert casting, brisk pacing and funny if formulaic odd-couple shenanigans make this Proposal hard to resist. Sandra Bullock plays a cranky career woman who manipulates her persecuted personal assistant (Ryan Reynolds) into masquerading as her fiancée to beat a deportation charge. As slight as it is silly but worth a look just to see how 88-year-old Betty White (TVs The Golden Girls) pulls off being perky even better than Bullock. (2009)

Miami Vice: Sky Movies Greats, 8.30pm Sunday.

Twenty years on the beat still goes on but Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) have gone so deep undercover that fans may not recognise them. While Miami Vice’s drug-trade globalisation plot feels even more synthetic than the alarming pastels of the ‘80s TV hit, the result is stylish and often suspenseful — albeit with none of the Heat of director Michael Mann’s previous TV re-make. (2006)

Me, Myself & Irene: TV3, 8.30pm Thursday.

Jim Carrey plays a Rhode Island state trooper whose inability to confront people and problems leaves him with a Jekyll & Hyde complex, or in this case, Mr Mouse and Mr Macho. Carrey carries off both with laugh-out-loud aplomb but is poorly served by a script that’s one-part gross comedy, one-part thriller and one-part love story. None of these elements meshes, and while Carrey and Renee Zellwegger were having an off-screen romance, such is their chemistry on-screen that you wouldn’t pick it. (2000)
