HDTV Movie Premieres: June 18-24

Salt: Sky Movies, 8.30pm Sunday.

Commonsense and logic take a battering in this sleek spy thriller from seasoned genre director Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Quiet American). Angelina Jolie plays a CIA hotshot who goes on the run after she’s accused of being a double-agent by a Russian defector, igniting a conspiracy that’s crammed with one preposterous twist (and stunt) after another. The sleight-of-hand shenanigans bear the outlandish signature of Law Abiding Citizen scribe Kurt Wimmer. (2010)

National Treasure: Sky Movies Greats, 8.30pm Sunday.

National Treasure may not be a gem but it’s an entertaining two hours of escapist piffle enriched by star chemistry, droll humour and exciting action. Nicolas Cage plays a treasure hunter who, with a couple of game if unlikely sidekicks, discovers the whereabouts of untold fortune that has been mapped on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight, Sean Bean and Harvey Keitel co-star; Jon Turtletaub (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) directs. (2004)

Brooklyn’s Finest: Sky Movies, 8.30pm Monday.

From the director of Training Day, Antoine Fuqua, comes a dense, suspenseful, atmospheric police drama about three NYPD veterans struggling with the demands of duty: one’s been in too deep undercover for too long, another’s a good cop on the cusp of turning bad because of circumstance, and the third risks everything on the eve of retiring after 22 years of playing it safe. Both a riveting thriller and a trenchant human-interest drama, it stars Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke. (2009)

Brothers: Sky Movies, 8.30pm Wednesday.

Said Variety of this obscurity from director Jim Sheridan (In America, In the Name of the Father): “Though it renders a convincing portrait of fractured family life and boasts its share of powerfully acted moments, this schematic tale of two siblings, ripped apart by jealousy, misunderstanding and unshakable trauma, plays like a more polished but less effective twin to the 2005 Danish original.” Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire star. (2009)
