HDTV Ratings: June 11-12

TV One’s MasterChef NZ finale sconed the competition on Tuesday but ratings were still relatively high for HD comedies The Middle and Suburgatory.

However, it proved a disastrous night for TV3 to try to relaunch Hawaii Five-O off the back of NCIS.

The latter had been rating strongly in recent weeks but against the second hour of MasterChef, it averaged only 5.2%-7.7% of the major demographics.

Not only was that a sub-par lead-in for Hawaii Five-O’s premiere but gangbuster ratings for MasterChef meant its lead-out, Coppers, rated exceptionally well.

It averaged 9.6%-14.0% against Five-O’s 2.1%-4.2% and Necessary Roughness’ 4.8%-7.3%.

However, the fact that Five-O’s audience was roughly half that of NCIS’ suggests it’s cursed to be a show that just doesn’t click with Kiwis.

The same can’t be said of The Middle, which is more popular here than in the US.

Even opposite MasterChef, it averaged a creditable 12.5%-19.4% of the key demos, much of which lead-out Suburgatory retained (9.4%-14.7%) to beat Funny Roots (6.4%-8.5%).

At 8.30, GCB rated 7.8%-10.3%, which was about half of Masterchef’s viewership.

On Monday, TV3’s HD repeat of the movie Eagle Eye was no match for TV2’s HD soaps.

Eagle Eye averaged 6.7%-7.5% compared to Desperate Housewives’ 11.5%-18.0% and Revenge’s 7.9%-13.7%.

TV One’s Criminal Minds rated 5.1%-9.6% and Person of Interest 3.8%-6.5% while TV3’s Modern Family scored 6.4%-7.8% — that was roughly double the viewership of lead-in Last Man Standing, which didn’t have a chance opposite the night’s most popular show, the hour-long edition of Shortland Street (19.1%-25.6%).

Am amazed that Hawaii Five-0 doesn’t rate better. For a ‘cop’ show, it’s really well done.

  2. Agreed, show shines in HD.
