HDTV Ratings: Ben and Jeremy’s Big Road Trip, Rapid Response, The Mentalist

Ben Hurley and Jeremy Corbett

TV3’s HD comedy special, Ben and Jeremy’s Big Road Trip, didn’t generate the ratings traffic it deserved last night but hopefully will lead to more primetime vehicles for the charismatic 7 Days duo.

The innovative, funny, and largely improvised spin-off with a Goodbye Pork Pie flavour was watched by 7.7% of 18-49 year-olds, compared to the 13.9% that tuned into TV One’s Border Patrol and its HD stablemate, Rapid Response, and the 12. 4% drawn to TV2’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

While Road Trip’s ratings were a smidgen off the previous week’s Destroyed in Seconds and Noise Control combo, combined with the popularity of TV3’s movie, Iron Man, they helped the network to win the night.

Meanwhile, last week’s season-two premiere of TV2’s The Mentalist may have blitzed the competition but last night’s instalment mustered only 12.3% of TV2’s chief demo, 18-39 year-olds — which meant either it lacked the mettle to trash Iron Man, which forged a 12.7% viewership, or already is being burned out by its twice-weekly primetime screenings.

“The innovative, funny, and largely improvised spin-off with a Goodbye Pork Pie flavour”

I wish I’d watched your alternate universe edition of “Ben and Jeremy’s Big Road Trip” because the version I saw was cut and paste Modern Family meets Gervais-style awkward humour except dumbed down, delivered without conviction, lacking in any discernable originality and a shame. A shame that people with obvious talent and intelligence allow network execs dictate the end product. It was crap.

  2. Call me chubby and badly dressed, but
if you’re going to waste good talent on infomercials for the NZ Transport Agency, start with a decent script.

And you really know a show is dire when Simon Barnett provides the comedic highlights.

  3. Bad and sad, what a load of drivel the whole lot was. “Decent script” I don’t think they even had a script. Ben had some natural humour, but Corbett just came across as dumb.

Funniest thing was the exterior car shots had no bearing on where they actually were and shooting the same hotel room twice – how cheap was that.

The whole thing was like a sleep induced car crash lol !
