Indiana Jones 4K-UHD Tops US Charts

Despite its steep sticker price for a catalogue franchise, the 4K-UHD box set of the four Indiana Jones movies has surged to the top of the disc sales charts in the US.

Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon was #1 for the fourth week in a row, Media Play News reports, while the Indy collection bowed in third place:

The No. 3 overall disc seller was Paramount’s June 8 re-release of its collection of the four “Indiana Jones” movies, headlined by a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition, which accounted for 91.6% of the boxed set’s total sales (8.1% were of the regular Blu-ray edition). Since nearly all the set’s sales were of Blu-ray formats, it was No. 2 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, where it sold 96.9% as many copies as top-selling Raya.

Media Play News also reports the newly released 4K-UHD version of Sony Pictures’ 2005 anime film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children accounted for 98.7% of the title’s sales for the week, which is heartening news for the higher resolution medium.

Disc sales continue to struggle largely because of the rise of streaming but the last few months have seen the likes of Universal Pictures push the 4K-UHD format with a slew of catalogue titles, from a Back to the Future box set to new transfers of classics like The Sting and Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, The Birds, Psycho and Vertigo.

In the US, Sony’s just announced a second eclectic volume of Columbia Classics, featuring Taxi Driver, Anatomy of a Murder, Oliver!, Stripes, Sense and Sensibility and The Social Network.

Volume 1 has still to be released outside the US but individual titles are starting to trickle through to other territories, starting with Dr Stranglove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Unfortunately, these have yet to show up on Sony’s NZ schedule and may not for some time. For instance, this week Sony re-issued one of those titles, Jerry Maguire, but only on Blu-ray with new extras. The refresh includes:

  • Jerry Maguire: We Meet Again — A 3-Part Retrospective Featuring New Interviews with Tom Cruise & Cameron Crowe
  • Nearly 60 Minutes of Never-Before-Seen Deleted & Extended Scenes
  • Photo Gallery
  • Theatrical Trailer• Picture-in-Picture Visual Commentary featuring Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Cameron Crowe
  • Deleted Scenes with Director and Editor’s Commentary
  • Rehearsal Footage with Director and Editor’s Commentary
  • “My First Commercial” with Rod Tidwell • Drew Rosenhaus: How to Be a Sports Agent
  • Music Video: “Secret Garden” by Bruce Springsteen
  • Making-Of Featurette.

On the 4K hardware front, there’s more good news: while most other brands have stopped making 4K disc players, Panasonic’s just announced an upgrade of its flagship UB9000.
