It’s Official: Avatar’s a Blu-ray Blockbuster in NZ

Avatar has become New Zealand’s biggest-selling Blu-ray and DVD in less than a week.

According to Roadshow Entertainment, it sold 35,499 DVDs in its first four days – which was 4,742 more units than Twilight sold over the same period. (It also was the most popular video rental for the week ending May 2.)

Blu-ray figures weren’t available at time of posting but a Roadshow spokesperson says the previous Blu-ray sales record was “annihilated”, with Avatar in HD selling more units in four days than The Dark Knight did over its entire release.

Meanwhile, in the United States, Avatar was the top-selling home video release for the second week in a row, with second place-getter, It’s Complicated, selling fewer than 25% as many copies.

Home Media Magazine reports that on Blu-ray the disparity was even greater, with It’s Complicated selling just 6% as many copies as Avatar.

The Blu-ray of It’s Complicated goes on sale here on May 26.
