Here’s the media release:

MIKE McROBERTS’ INTIMATE NEW DOCUMENTARY KIA ORA, GOOD EVENING, CHARTS HIS REO JOURNEY AS HE RECONNECTS WITH HIS CULTURAL IDENTITY ON THREE AND THREENOW

30 August 2022 – Award-winning journalist and Newshub Live at 6pm presenter Mike McRoberts shares his personal journey on Kia Ora, Good Evening.

The one-hour feature documents Mike’s transformational journey as he attempts to reclaim a taonga that was lost to his whānau a generation ago – the ability to speak te reo Māori.

In this deeply personal documentary, produced with Great Southern Television, we see Mike and his whānau as we’ve never seen them before – unearthing the powerful story of connection, and what it means to be Māori in contemporary Aotearoa.

Mike says, “This journey is not just something I want, it’s something I need – it’s not just about learning how to speak a language, it’s about knowing who you are. It’s about understanding the whakamā (shame) that I’ve had for so long, not knowing how to speak it.”

Warner Bros. Discovery ANZ Senior Director of News Sarah Bristow says, “This documentary is utterly captivating and I am proud of how Mike has opened up in such a raw and authentic way to take the audience on his very personal journey.”

“The beauty of this story is that there will be many other New Zealanders who can identify with what Mike has gone through.”

Kia Ora, Good Evening premieres during Māori Language Week, at 8.40pm Tuesday 13 September on Three and Three Now.
Made with the support of Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air.
