Last Rites for The Exorcist?

Could this weekend be the last time The Exorcist (TV2, 9.30) screens in primetime?

Last weekend the ratings for the Lethal Weapon stablemate sunk to a season low of 1.1% of TV2’s target audience, 18-49 year-olds.

The movie spin-off was beaten by both the second half of TV1’s Bombshell: The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior and TV3’s Best of Graham Norton Show repeat.

The previous week it averaged 2.9% of this demographic to beat TV3’s Michael McIntyre’s Big Show but not TV1’s Doubt: The Scott Thomas Case.

Its September 24 premiere averaged only 1.9% and its ratings in other key age demos have also been sliding.

The 18-39 viewership has declined from 4.3% to 1.1%, and that of household shoppers with kids from 5.5% to 3.1%.

Ratings for lead-in Lethal Weapon, which already has been renewed in the US, also haven’t been flash.

The premiere averaged 3.2% of 18-49s against Grand Designs NZ’s 3.6% and last week’s episode, 3.4%, to finish third at 8.30.

Next Sunday TV2 is pre-empting both for the Labour Weekend movie, Jack Reacher.

Stunt programming like this often is a ploy for a network to dump struggling shows and launch replacements the following week.

But at this stage it looks as if Lethal Weapon will remain on the schedule, given its competitive 25-54 viewership, and that The Exorcist will be usurped by more episodes of the reality hour, The Day I Almost Died.

Lethal Weapon’s renewal also is a vote of confidence in it staying a Sunday night staple whereas The Exorcist’s US ratings have been dire enough for predictions it will be one of the fall season’s early casualties.

Meanwhile, fans of Supernatural who resisted watching season 11 in SD on Duke can see it in HD when it replaces Gotham late-night Sundays on TV2 from Labour Weekend.

Bye bye Exorcist, it’s one of the worst shows on TV, along with the awful Lethal Weapon. Was enjoying the Gotham doubles until it got pushed later. Good news on Supernatural.

  2. The new show on Netflix Glitch is excellent, hope they make more episodes then 6 for season 2, such an intriguing show 🙂

  3. Hopefully The Exorcist will be back on tvnz in the near future. Even if it is really late at night.

  4. The good news is TVNZ 2 will resume it from October 30, but at 11.30.

  5. Thanks Philip. That is good news!
