Lightbox Poised to Top 300,000 Subs

Spark’s streaming service Lightbox is about to notch up its 300,000th subscriber on the eve of premiering top-rating US drama The Good Doctor.

“We are incredibly proud of the progress we have made to take Lightbox from an idea to one of New Zealand’s most popular SVOD services in just three years,” Lightbox General Manager Hema Patel says.

“We’ve done this by taking a leadership position in the media market to bring high-quality content to New Zealanders.”

She says 44% of Kiwis are streaming content via SVOD and with the NZ market rapidly advancing, the number will only continue to grow.

“We saw a huge rush in new subscribers when we recently launched The Handmaid’s Tale exclusively in New Zealand and we’re seeing similar surges with the new season of Outlander and ambitious anthology series Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams.

“We certainly don’t plan on slowing down, we have a pipeline of fresh, quality new content for screens all across New Zealand.”

Spark says the new subscriber milestone will mean about 1,000,000 New Zealanders have access to thousands of hours on Lightbox, with The Handmaid’s TaleSuits, Better Call Saul and Vikings set to return next year while pending newcomers include The Good Doctor, which stars Bates Motel’s Freddie Highmore.

The Good Doctor has been dubbed “the runaway sensation of the 2017 fall TV season” that has surprised everyone by becoming  the most-watched show on television.

I’m sure a lot of them are via free Spark accounts like mine.

  2. Broadband @ $85/month less Lightbox $13/mth = $72 or $62.60 pre GST. The CEO stated that for Skinny after paying Chorus that the $16/mth left over barely covers costs. $62.60 less Chorus’s $42 less the $16 “broadband management technology, national and international networking, customer service, sales and marketing, and billing and administration” costs = $4.6/mth profit per broadband sub. So why is Spark doing entertainment again? Imagine how much more profitable it could be? $11.30 per sub per month.

  3. The Good Doctor has started strongly in Australian ratings too, bet the FTAs are kicking themselves on missing out. Good scoop for Lightbox.

  4. 300,000 Lightbox subscribers? That’s as big as Wellington or Christchurch.
