Local Shows Gain From TVNZ’s Sunday Woes

TV3’s Grand Designs NZ and Prime’s The Brokenwood Mysteries rated higher than usual on Sunday due to viewers deserting TVNZ 1’s Victoria and TVNZ 2 having to pre-empt Lethal Weapon at the 11th hour.

Grand Designs averaged a season high, with 6.9% of 25-54 year-olds and 5.7% of 18-49s.

It won the 8.30 hour against Victoria, which was down sharply on last week’s premiere: it drew only 3.9% of 25-54s compared to 5.2% the previous week.

However, 18-49 viewership was steady: 3.4% vs 3.9% for the premiere.

TVNZ 2’s replacement for Lethal Weapon, The Pacifier, couldn’t trigger as much interest, averaging 4.4% of 25-54s (vs 6.2% for last week’s LW) and 4.5% of 18-49s (vs 5.6%).

GDNZ wasn’t the only beneficiary of TVNZ’s losses: The Brokenwood Mysteries averaged 2.0% of 25-54s compared to 1.4% the previous week.

But Our Big Blue Backyard continued its buoyant ratings for TVNZ 1, averaging 5.5% of 25-54s and 4.9% of 18-49s — although TVNZ 2’s Australian Survivor out-rated both to win the 7.00-8.30 zone.

TV3’s repeat of Humans averaged 2.4% of 25-54s, which was two-tenths of a point higher than TVNZ 1’s repeat of Broadchurch — but a couple of points behind The Pacifier and nearly a point down on the previous week’s Best of Graham Norton Show.

The Exorcist again exceeded expectations at 11.30, out-rating lead-in Dead of Summer among 25-54s (it averaged 2.3% of this demo, which was a point lower than last week’s episode but still enough to win the hour in all the core demos).

TV3’s network movie premiere of The Drop scored only 1.5% of 25-54s to finish third behind TVNZ 2’s horror shows and TVNZ 1’s repeat of Call the Midwife.
