Making a Ratings Point

As of this week, there will be more HD ratings coverage on

It will be limited to overnights, which the networks don’t like to highlight because a programme’s popularity is now measured by consolidated data that includes time-shifted and on-demand viewing.

But unlike their counterparts in the US, UK and Australia, the networks won’t provide daily data to media. So I am fortunate in being able to access the overnights from an independent source.

While a programme’s longevity in a slot won’t be determined by its overnight performance, this measure is still relevant and indicates initial interest in a series and the competitive forces programmers face.

There will be regular posts analysing how well programmes are faring and most days I will compile tables detailing the top 20 overnight shows in three of the key demographics: 18-49, 25-54 and 5+.

The 18-49 and 25-54 demos matter most to the HD networks and while 5+ is of far less consequence to advertisers and programmers, its inclusion is warranted because it reflects which shows have the broadest appeal.

The first tables are for Wednesday and Thursday of last week and will be posted shortly.

This initiative is in response to the many readers who have requested more ratings coverage and while it isn’t as thorough as what Throng used to provide, I hope it will help to shed more light on some of the factors that influence the scheduling of free-to-air TV.
