TV3’s New Season Master Stroke NZ

TV3 has picked up MasterChef NZ and will launch a Kiwi version of The Bachelor in 2015.

The two properties hitherto have been TVNZ staples but TV One quit MasterChef for the lower-rating My Kitchen Rules NZ while TV2 has aired only the international versions of The Bachelor.

The acquisitions were announced at MediaWorks’ new season launch tonight, with the biggest HD casualties being The Simpsons, which appears to be returning to Four exclusively, and The GC, the third season of which also will air on TV3’s sister SD channel.

TV3 is resolutely going all out to fly the NZ flag in 2015, with Outrageous Fortune prequel Westside Story, Australian miniseries Gallipoli starring Kiwi Grant Bowler, Grand Designs NZ, Funny Girls and the return of The X Factor, The Block, Lost & Found, and in HD for the first time, Jono and Ben at Ten and 7Days.

It’s also launching a Paul Henry breakfast show that will be broadcast simultaneously on TV3 and RadioLIVE with a strong focus on the digital, mobile and social media worlds.

It’s not clear if this or any of MediaWorks’ other news and current affairs programming will be in HD with the building of new studio facilities to accommodate the multiplatform initiative.

New international series will include Hamish and Andy’s South American Gap Year, the modern marriage drama Satisfaction, CIA thriller State of Affairs, Australian reality series The Embassy, Heroes: Reborn, Kevin McCloud’s Man Made Home, Chicago Fire spin-off Chicago PD, political drama Odyssey and Ocker reality half-hour Gold Coast Cops.

Returning will be The Blacklist, Hawaii Five-O, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Road Cops, Road Madness, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Graham Norton Show, Motive, The X Factor Australia, Live At The Apollo, The Michael McIntyre Chat Show, Grand Designs UK, Grand Designs Australia, Ice Road Truckers and SVU: Special Victims Unit.

Among the movies you can expect to see in HD next year on TV3:

  • Identity Thief
  • Fast & Furious
  • About Time
  • The World’s End
  • Shrek Forever After
  • This is 40
  • Ice Age: Continental Drift
  • Despicable Me 2
  • Oblivion.

Did not see that coming tonight. What a coup for MediaWorks and expect 2015 to be a big year for them. Very happy with the announcement of our own Xtra Factor but I`m not too sure about The Bachelor NZ. With all the expensive output deals gone, MW has alot of cash to invest locally. I can’t see TVNZ topping this slate for 2015 unless The Voice NZ is coming and a local version of TV3 hit House Rules. I guess there ain’t any more money left in the kitty to upgrade FOUR to HD.

  2. Reality TV shows now make front page news headlines. This is what TV in NZ has come to. Really dumbed down.

  3. What a pathetic line-up! Reality crapola and 3rd rate entertainment and light weight dramas. MediaWorks might as well shut up shop.
