May Days for First 4K Blu-rays

The Revenant will be the first new release to be distributed here on 4K/UHD Blu-ray.

It will go on sale on May 18, a month after its US bow and two weeks after 4K re-issues of X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Martian, The Maze Runner, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, Life of Pi and The Kingsman: Secret Service.

Universal Pictures NZ will distribute these titles, for a retail price that’s yet to be disclosed. But expect to pay at least a $10 premium for the 4K option, which will be bundled with a 2K disc.

Roadshow Entertainment is looking to re-issue five titles on 4K in May, too. These have yet to be confirmed but probably will include Mad Max: Fury Road, which came out last month in the US.

One review of MMFR on 4K highlighted the downside of the new, higher-definition format.

“The combination of HDR [high dynamic range] and enhanced resolution is not an unalloyed benefit,”’s Michael Reuben notes, citing how they can make CGI looked artificial and unrealistic.

“It’s not an accident that the first wave of UHD discs is dominated by movies that were shot digitally.

“The real test of the format won’t come until we see how it’s applied to a variety of filmed sources, including those requiring extensive and costly restoration like Lawrence of Arabia or My Fair Lady.

“Will such films be transferred to UHD with respect for their original look? Or will HDR become the latest process applied to ‘freshen’ old films for modern eyes?”

The good news for NZ consumers is none of these titles is regionally coded, so they will play on the 4K players Panasonic and Samsung will soon launch here.

  1. “The good news for NZ consumers is none of these titles is regionally coded”: Wonder if it will stay that way for change later? Mind you, Universal Blu-rays have always been region free from day one.
