My Sky + … Movies in May

May’s a monster month for movie franchises on Sky.

Sky Movies Premiere debuts Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Godzilla, Sky Movies Greats has the original Bourne trilogy and Sky Movies Classics recruits the Police Academy fraternity.

Other notable premieres include Fury, Million Dollar Arm and Decoding Annie Parker while horror buffs can devour Wolves, Beyond, The Frighteners, Shaun of the Dead and Cold Creek Manor.

Sky Movies Action is adding a series to its line-up, Kingdom, which will play in Sunday night double-episodes from May 3.

Entertainment Weekly said the series, which is set in a mixed martial arts gym, “grinds out excellent family drama via lived-in characters and escalating stakes” while the Los Angeles Times reckons “creator Byron Balasco (Detroit 1-8-7) has made not so much a sports story as a study of dysfunctional males and their curious bonds.

“It feels a bit like Sons of Anarchy in that regard, though somewhat less idealised — an extended-family drama not wholly dependent on the setting.”

Variety agreed Kingdom was “more compelling than it sounds, conjuring a gritty atmosphere (you can practically smell the gym through the TV) around its fractured family ties, along with familiar questions regarding redemption and second chances.”
