Neon in Vogue for Fashion Week

Sky’s streaming service Neon has curated a season of documentaries about fashion as a curtain raiser to NZ Fashion Week.

Spearheading the haute couture programming is director Sofia Coppola’s first documentary, Marc by Sofia, which premieres on August 15.

It’s a “personal and intimate” portrait of designer Marc Jacobs, spanning their friendship from when they met 30 years ago in their grunge heyday to a sneak peek of his latest collections.

Reviews were mixed. “Fashion is fleeting; this film is positively disposable,” the Wall Street Journal quipped.

Screen International thought it “light on probing insights, instead offering viewers a chance to see a relaxed Jacobs talk to a close friend about his inspirations and artistic philosophy.”

And The Hollywood reporter observed: “It’s a bauble of a film, but also so distinctly Sofia Coppola’s style that it’s a must-see for anyone interested in the aesthetics of her career.

“In that respect, Sofia by Sofia might have worked as a title too.”

Also lined up to celebrate “the visionaries, disruptors and icons who’ve shaped the world of fashion” are:

  • Cutting the Curve
  • Martin Margiela: In His Own Words
  • Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex, Fashion & Disco
  • Akris: Fashion with a Heritage
  • Dust to Dust
  • Kevyn Aucoin: Beauty & The Beast in Me
  • Thom Brown: The Man Who Tailors Dreams.
