Neon Snares Tiger Woods Tale
An HBO documentary about golf phenomenon Tiger Woods will have its NZ premiere on Sky’s Neon.
The two-part Tiger will land here on January 22, nearly two weeks after its January 10 tee-off on HBO, and also will screen on Sky’s golf channel, Sky Sport 6. Reads the blurb:
The series paints an intimate picture of the prodigy whose dedication and obsession with the game of golf not only took his fame and success to new heights, but also down a dark, spiraling road that eventually led to a legendary sports comeback, culminated by his victory at the 2019 Masters.
Tiger highlights never-before-seen-footage and interviews with those who know Tiger Woods best, including his former caddy and close friend, Steve Williams; golf legend Sir Nick Faldo; his father Earl Woods’ friend and biographer, Pete McDaniel; Tiger’s first true love, Dina Parr; and Rachel Uchitel, the woman at the center of the sex scandal that forever altered Tiger’s world, breaking her silence for the first time.
Golf Digest thought it “entertaining, but also somewhat familiar … it offers nothing new or revelatory” whereas TV critics were more impressed.
“What unfolds throughout the documentary makes Woods’ 2018 comeback, when he won the PGA Tour after a five-year drought, seem improbable, almost fantastic, but Tiger Woods still had a few miracles left in him,’ says the AV Club.
“Tiger effectively reminds us why we found the legend of Tiger Woods so compelling, while never losing sight of his complex humanity.”
Decider thought it “captivating, heartbreaking, and triumphant, much like the legendary athlete’s actual life.
“But perhaps this tale’s biggest success is that it will appeal to everyone. If you want golf, you know you’ve got it, and if you want gossip, hoo boy is that present as well.”
