Moana (TVNZ 2, 6.30) Christmas Day. Bet it’s loaded with station promos every 10 minutes. No such thing as a commercial-free day here.

  2. Die Hard 1 & 2 were unwatchable ! TV2 decided to show badly transferred pan and scan versions that belong to the old SD era of TV and have no place on a modern HD platform.

  3. Really? That’s unbelievable!

  4. I note that three plays movies in 16:9 vs the original 2:35 version. Look at the Fast and Furious movie the other week. Never watched it (only a few minutes). It’s disgraceful. I really don’t understand the point in playing the cropped versions. Eg HD version of old Simpsons. I complained to Sky about it and they just said it’s part of the contract. So as far as I’m aware, it’s not going to go back to the old 4:3 versions.

  5. Completely agree with you re 16:9 vs 21:9, Fsmith. I was amazed when thx38 reported the pan-and-scan broadcasts of the Die Hard movies as generally TVNZ 2 licences movie content in the original aspect ratio. However, I don’t know if this is deliberate or simply accidental — ie. what the distributor provides. For years Simpsons fans have complained of the cropped pre-native HD eps but Fox doesn’t appear interested in providing the original 4:3 broadcasts in upscaled HD. Seinfeld suffered the same fate when it was remastered in HD. To be fair to the FTA broadcasters, I imagine most viewers want their movies in screen-filling 16:9. But hopefully this bias will wane as more content is streamed in a variety of ratios and letter boxing becomes the norm.
