I noticed Three had Mamma Mia 2 in full screen mode while on iTunes movies I have got it with black bars so I wonder if they made different versions? Anyhow, great movie. In fact it’s better than the original movie in my opinion. Knowing how much New Zealand loves ABBA I bet the ratings were sky high, at least I hope they were 🙂
Thanks, Trevor. MM2 was shot in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, which means the iTunes presentation is the correct way to view it. Three would have broadcast a cropped 16:9 transfer that fills the screen. Typically this is how distributors provide letterbox movies to broadcasters. Both parties reckon viewers prefer not to see black bars top and bottom — even if it means they’re actually seeing less of the original content rather than more!
I thought that was the case Philip. It’s so ridiculous when they do that as I’m sure most people wouldn’t care about it 🙂
