THE HUI ANNOUNCES JULIAN WILCOX AS HOST

Warner Bros. Discovery ANZ, together with Great Southern Television, has today announced Julian Wilcox as the new host of Māori current affairs show The Hui as it returns to air on Monday 6 March on Three, and ThreeNow.

Julian Wilcox (Ngāpuhi, Te Arawa) first hit the New Zealand airwaves in 2004 with Māori Television, and was one of the most prominent faces and voices of the channel for its first decade.

Across his busy lifestyle, Julian has also lectured te reo, tikanga, whaikōrero and media. Fluent in both English and te Reo Māori, Julian moved into iwi business in 2014, working as chief operating officer for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.

Julian’s love and passion for Māori broadcasting has never left the award winning broadcaster, & the former television executive has still kept his foot in the industry, and currently hosts Māpuna on RNZ.

Senior Director of News, Newshub Sarah Bristow says, “Julian is an exceptional broadcaster who I know will continue The Hui’scommitment to Māori current affairs for all New Zealanders, but who will also bring his own experience and perspective to this kaupapa.”

Julian says, “It’s a privilege to be joining this team that has been a leading light in current affairs journalism, and it’s an honour to help care for the mauri of the programme.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work of Annabelle Lee Mather and Mihingarangi Forbes leading this team for the last seven seasons and establishing an extremely successful and credible show.

“I’m excited to work with the team to continue to tell the stories that matter, to shed light where there is darkness, to champion our people, and slip in as many Hurricanes stories as possible.”

The Hui premieres on Monday 6 March at 4.30pm and encores on Three on Tuesdays after Newshub Late.

With Julian at the helm, the 2023 season of The Hui will keep its core foundation of producing high quality journalism from a Māori perspective.

  1. Why is Mihingarangi Forbes not presenting The Hui? Our Aroha Mihingarangi na Mata n many Maori Wahine katoa.

  2. According to Forbes,”In the end, we had to leave because we couldn’t do the jobs as journalists that we set out to do, and that we were being paid to do. The only thing you do there is you have to leave – nothing good is going to come from staying and fighting.” Check out this Newshub video: https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/entertainment/2022/12/presenter-mihingarangi-forbes-and-producer-annabelle-lee-mather-say-final-goodbyes-to-the-hui.html
