New Season: A Sorry State of Affairs

TV3’s series premiere of terrorist-thwarting thriller State of Affairs bombed on Monday.

It averaged only 1.8% – 2.4% of the commercial demographics compared to 4.7% – 6.1% for lead-in The Blacklist.

But such is TV3’s faith in Katherine Heigl’s first series since Grey’s Anatomy that it’s going to re-run at least the first two episodes to try to build momentum for her spycatcher.

If you missed last night’s premiere, it screens again 11pm Sunday; TV3 will repeat episode two in the same slot on March 8, which originally had been earmarked for a re-run of Backstrom’s March 5 debut.

State of Affairs’ Monday launch was thrashed by TV2’s The Walking Dead (5.7% – 10.1%) and even TV1’s preposterous Forever (2.7% – 5.1%).

TV1’s canny scheduling of the drama about an immortal medical examiner, with last week’s double-episode premiere, gave it a head start on State of Affairs.

Forever also is typical of the gimmicky, glossy, lightweight drama that does well in this market — remember Unforgettable? Missing? — whereas series with US homeland themes, like State of Affairs and 24, tend to tank.

At 8.30, however, TV1 is still struggling with Stalker (2.9% – 5.1%).

It’s competitive with The Blacklist and TV2’s The Mysteries of Laura (5.7% – 9.8%) only in the 25-54 demo, where it still finished third.

The Blacklist, of course, was helped by lead-in The X Factor NZ (7.5% – 10.5%), which was beaten only in its first quarter hour by TV2’s The Middle (6.6% – 9.9%) off the back of Shortland Street (11.1% – 14.8%).

TV1’s 7.30 option, Our First Home, averaged 3.0% – 5.8% and TV2’s 8pm comedy Cougar Town, 5.6% – 7.9%.

TV3 had a better night Sunday, when its premiere of A Good Day to Die Hard averaged 4.6% – 7.3% to dominate in the 18-49 and household shoppers with kids demos while Friday’s return of 7 Days (for the first time in HD) and the premiere of Fail Army helped it to conquer the 9.30 ratings war zone.

Watched about half of the first episode – only because of the saucy promo – and it was awful. Every time Heigl opened her mouth hilarity ensued. Unintentional comedy at its best/worst.
