New Season: Backstrom a Step Backwards for TV3

TV3 programmers will need plenty of backbone to keep quirky new cop show Backstrom on air if its rating don’t improve tonight.

The series made a disastrous debut when it launched last week, averaging only 1.0% – 2.3% of the commercial demographics.

It roughly lost more than half of its lead-in from Top Gear (4.2% – 4.5%), and even was out-rated by lowly lead-out Motive (1.3% – 3.1%) in two of the key demos, and equalled it in a third.

The only good news for TV3 was viewership was steady across the hour but that’s of little solace when TV1’s Offspring averaged 2.7% – 4.4% and TV2’s The Flash 6.0% – 6.6%.

In TV3’s target 25-54 demo, Backstrom scored only an 8.4% channel share compared to Offspring’s 15.2% and The Flash’s 22.8%.

The show’s prospects also aren’t helped by reviews as scathing as Greg Dixon’s in the Weekend Herald, which dubbed it “possibly the most aggravating and repellent American cop show I think I’ve ever seen”.

There was better crime drama news for TV3 on Saturday, when CSI (2.3% – 5.2%) largely won its slot in the 25-54 and household-shoppers-with-kids demos and lead-out Chicago PD (2.2% – 3.1%) was competitive at 9.30, where it was soundly beaten by TV2’s movie The Pursuit of Happiness but was well ahead of TV1’s Nashville.

TV3’s NCIS double-bill also is proving exceptionally durable on Tuesdays.

This week’s episode of the aged parent show won the slot in the 18-49 and 25-54 demos but lost to TV2’s How to Get Away With Murder in the 18-39 race and to TV1’s Person of Interest among HHS/k.

Spin-off NCIS: LA lost to Grey’s Anatomy at 9.30 but was competitive in all the key demos except HHS/k and trounced the series finale of Fat Tony & Co on TV1.
