New Season: Top Gear Doesn’t Go Out on Top

Top Gear finale fails to dent Police Ten 7

Despite weeks of headlines about the controversy behind its demise, TV3’s prematurely shortened season of Top Gear didn’t top the ratings when it ended on Thursday.

The last episode to feature Jeremy Clarkson averaged 5.0% – 8.8% of the commercial demographics.

That was streets ahead of TV1’s Katherine Mills: Mind Games but well behind TV2’s Police Ten 7 (9.3% – 14.8%) and Highway Patrol (8.7% – 11.9%) on the back of a resurgent Shortland Street (10.8% – 16.7%).

But Top Gear’s season finale rated better than usual because of a lift from its lead-in: the under-siege Campbell Live (3.4% – 5.3%).

It rated higher than the previous Thursday but not as high as Wednesday’s broadcast, which was unusually competitive with TV1’s Seven Sharp in the key demos (ironically, this was on the eve of revelations about MediaWorks’ plans for 7pm weekdays).

For the latest on who or what’s likely to succeed Campbell Live, see contributor Doug Coutts’ exclusive.

Meanwhile, the ratings race was closer between TV2’s superhero duo and TV3’s Flight of the Phoenix.

Over two hours the movie averaged 3.5% – 6.3% compared to The Flash’s 5.0% – 6.9% and Arrow’s 3.2% – 5.1% while TV1’s Offspring (3.2% – 5.1%) was competitive in the 25-54 demo.

But the night was a clean sweep for TV2, with the network easily winning in all the key demos:

I know I’m off topic but I just wondered if there is anyone excited about Daredevil coming up today or tomorrow on Netflix? I am, can’t wait 🙂

  2. I’m not surprised, Trevor. Early reviews have been very positive, suggesting it succeeds where the likes of Gotham, Arrow and The Flash fall short. Here’s a round-up

  3. Thanks, Philip, it sounds great … think I know what I will be watching in the weekend 🙂

  4. DD beats Gotham, Arrow and Flash combined. 😉

  5. Interestingly, despite being a fan of the show and the trio, I only caught one part of one episode of Top Gear while it’s been on TV3. Why? The timeslot. For us it’s always been a Sunday evening show. Besides, we’re never in front of the telly much before 20:00.
