New Season: X Factor Still Our First Choice

The NZ Herald and Stuff today reported Sunday’s X Factor NZ tumbled after bad press about one of its contestants (for a more measured analysis, see Throng’s) — but the broadcast still easily won its slot.

Yes, it was beaten for the first time by TV1’s Our First Home in the 5+ demographic.

But the two were neck-and-neck the previous Sunday and X Factor topped the demos –18-39, 18-49, 25-54, household shoppers with kids — that count more with networks and advertisers.

In these targets, the talent quest averaged 6.5% – 7.8% compared to 7.0% – 11.0% the previous week.

Our First Home, which had the benefit of a much stronger lead-in from One News/Sunday, averaged 4.7% – 6.2% of the same demos.

It was also a higher profile night for TV1 because of the final of Broadchurch, which averaged 5.1% – 8.9% and was up in all the key demos week-on-week except HHS/k.

TV3 also scored strongly with its re-run of The A-Team (6.2% – 8.4%), which out-rated last week’s network premiere of A Good Day to Die Hard and helped it win the night in all the key demos.

TV2 was the night’s biggest loser, with The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls and Gotham all down on the previous week.

Here are the night’s peak-hour ratings and shares for the HD networks:

There was more good news for TV3 on Saturday, when its struggling crime-time dramas scored season highs while TV1’s new-look lineup of Along For the Ride and Our World: The Great Bear Stakeout flopped.

TV3 also had the edge on Friday, with The Graham Norton Show and 7 Dayseven if newcomer Fail Army gave up their gains, and while TV2’s Shortland Street averaged only 7.7% – 13.1% of the key demos, its channel shares were still massive (34.4% – 46.4%).

TV2 ruled on Thursday, with Police Ten 7, Highway Patrol, The Flash and Arrow but TV3’s Top Gear was more competitive than TV1’s premiere of Shed of the Year except among HHS/k.
