New to Acorn TV in January
Jimmy McGovern fans can look forward to more of the writer’s output next month on Acorn TV, with the streaming service premiering the movie-length drama Care the same day as series one and two of Moving On.
Care stars Sheridan Smith as a struggling solo mum who suddenly has to become her own mother’s caregiver after she suffers a stroke.
Alison Steadman co-stars in what The Guardian dubbed a “delicately observed drama … Care has a Happy Valley–ish recognition and appreciation of how women’s lives so often work out; of how age brings with it more, not fewer, responsibilities …
“It is a spare, tight, moving piece of drama that should force us all to care – about who will look after us in our old age, who will look after them and who will fund it all.”
Care will stream from January 4, along with the daytime anthology series McGovern created in 2009. Moving On continues to be produced, with the 11th and most recent season airing earlier this year on BBC1.
Also new to Acorn TV will be season one of the TVNZ 1 hit, My Life is Murder, which stars Lucy Lawless as an ex-homicide detective in Melbourne, and the award-wining four-part thriller 2010 thriller, The Silence, about a deaf 18-year-old who witnesses a police officer’s murder.
There also will be another chance to view the original Brideshead Revisited starring Jeremy Irons, The Last Detective starring Peter Davison, and the story behind the WWI satirical journal, The Wipers Times, starring Michael Palin and Ben Chaplin.
