New to Acorn TV in June

Acorn TV is ready to go-go with its latest original premiere: season two of Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries will launch globally on the streaming service on June 7 (view the trailer here).

The Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries spin-off is set in 1964 Melbourne and stars Wanted’s Geraldine Hakewill as Peregrine Fisher, a private detective trying to live up to her Aunt Phryne’s legacy.

The eight-part S2 will open with a double-episode and continue with new episodes weekly.

S1 was favourably reviewed, with the Wall Street Journal observing the pre-Beatles, pre-women’s-lib era provides “the opportunity for candy-coloured production design, retro-chic Bauhaus architecture and Mary Quant-ified dress designs.

“It also allows the exploitation of a cultural moment when attitudes about gender disparity and equality in general were starker, more regressive — and less complicated. Which is a big reason why TV producers and writers love the ’60s.”

Also new next month on Acorn TV will be S2 of Blood (June 14), which first screened here on Rialto, and S2 of The Sommerdahl Murders (June 21), Denmark’s answer to The Midsomer Murders, as well as S21 of the British evergreen that inspired it (June 14).

Other highlights will include the 2016 miniseries about Britain’s first known female serial killer Dark Angel, and S2 of Aurora Teagarden and Candice Renoir (June 28).
