New to Amazon Prime Video in August

Bear Grylls’ World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji will premiere August 14 on Amazon Prime Video.

The 10-part series follows 66 teams from across the globe, including NZ, traversing the Fijian jungle. Promises the blurb:

The greatest challenges are not the competing teams, but the unforgiving terrain which stands between all those competing and the finish line. Viewers worldwide will see the limits of human physical and mental endurance tested like never before.

If you prefer your wilderness adventures scripted, APV also will premiere Get Duked! (August 28), a wacky mix of horror and comedy about three friends who wind up being hunted for sport in the Irish hinterland.

Music video director Ninan Doff’s movie debut was nominated for Best British Feature Film at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Tragic young-adult love story Chemical Hearts (August 21) stars Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart as a transfer student with a heartbreaking secret who falls in love with her co-editor (Euphoria’s Austin Adams) on a high school newspaper.

And amid a raft of modern US and UK classic series, APV will exclusively stream newcomer David Makes Man (August 1).

About a teenage prodigy whose mother is trying to work her way out of a poor Florida neighbourhood, it’s one of the few series to score a 100% critics’ verdict on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus was:

Powerful, beautiful, and like nothing else on TV, David Makes Man blends dreamy aesthetics with an empathetically crafted story to create a truly unique viewing experience.

It was created by Tarell Alvin McCraney, who was credited for the story on the Oscar-winning Moonlight; his inspiration for David came from events in his own life.

APV will stream the first 10-episode season; S2 will debut later this year on the Oprah Winfrey channel, OWN.
