New to Amazon Prime Video in July

Movies dominate July’s new attractions on Amazon Prime Video, with the only new series being season two of Making the Cut and the premieres of Luxe Listings Sydney and romantic comedy The Pursuit of Love.

Written and directed by Emily Mortimer, The Pursuit of Love is an adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s celebrated novel set in Europe between the two world wars, when two women test their friendship in pursuit of the perfect husband. Reads the blurb:

As social and political divisions split the nation, their diverging choices raise personal questions that remain intensely relevant today – questions about freedom, about love and sex, and the mystery of the human heart.

Lily James, Emily Beecham, Dominic West and Andrew Scott star in a three-part series that The Guardian thought “absolutely glorious … an instant classic” and the Independent “a post-Bridgerton bonkbuster [that] made up for its lack of subtlety with overflowing enthusiasm”.

The Pursuit of Love screened on BBC1 and iPlayer in the UK. Distributor BBC Studios brokered the deal with Amazon Studios for it to stream on the service in NZ, Australia, the US and Canada.

Among the movie premieres will be Jolt and The Tomorrow War.

The latter is a sci-fi thriller about a high school teacher (Christ Pratt), his estranged father (JK Simmons) and a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) who are recruited to travel 30 years into there future to fight a global war against alien invaders.

Jolt stars Kate Beckinsale as beautiful, sardonically-funny woman with  a lifelong, rare neurological disorder: she experiences sporadic rage-filled, murderous impulses that can only be stopped when she shocks herself with a special electrode device. Reads the rest of the burb:

Unable to find love and connection in a world that fears her bizarre condition, she finally trusts a man long enough to fall in love, only to find him murdered the next day. Heartbroken and enraged, she embarks on a revenge-filled mission to find his killer, while also being pursued by the police as the crime’s prime suspect.
