New to AMC+ Etc in August

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which already streams here on TVNZ+, also will be available on AMC+ from August 29.

Separately, AMC+ has struck a deal for 13 of its series, including this TWD spin-off, to stream on Netflix for a year, with the first rolling out next month.

It’s not clear if the pact covers only the US rights or international territories like NZ as well.

Reports Variety: “AMC is hoping that by tapping into Netflix’s humongous audience (compare AMC’s 11.5 million paid streaming subscribers to Netflix’s 269.6 million), the network might be able to bring mass attention to a lesser seen yet critically acclaimed series — say, the Breaking Bad effect.”

Exclusive to AMC+ is The Walking Dead: The Return (August 22), a one-hour special in which Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and Danai Gurira (Michonne) reminisce about their time on the show, catch the audience up on their character narratives, and preview what’s next for them in TWD: The Ones Who Live.

New to sister platform Acorn TV are S2 of DI Ray (August 19), in which she investigates the double homicide of a notorious crime family boss and an innocent nurse caught in the crossfire, and S3 of Frankie Drake Mysteries (August 12).

AMC’s horror platform Shudder has a slew of exclusive premieres next month, including the behind-the-scenes series, Horror’s Greatest (August 27), which explores in depth everything from genre classics to treasured obscurities. Reads the blurb:

A gallery of ghoulish pros, including actors, directors, writers, composers, and special effects artists, draw on their unique knowledge to answer the big questions: What are the must- see films in horror’s many sub-genres? What’s the appeal of horror tropes, and how do today’s filmmakers subvert our expectations? What shape does horror take in countries outside of the United States?

Also new to Shudder are a new episode of The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs (August 18) and the movies:

  • The Coffee Table (August 5), in which struggling new parents buy a coffee table with a catch
  • Late Night With the Devil (August 10), in which a struggling late-night talk show host does the unthinkable to boost his ratings
  • Dancing Village: The Curse Begins (August 16), about eerie events on Java Island
  • Hell Hole (August 23), in which an America-led fracking crew uncovers a living French soldier frozen in time from a Napoleonic campaign whose body hosts a parasitic monster.
