New to AMC+ Etc in November

G.R.I.T.S. is a new AMC+ series that’s rolling out in weekly episodes the same time as its US run.

The title stands for Girls Raised in the South, in this case three young women coming of age in Memphis. Reads the blurb:

Determined to define the next chapter in their lives, they find solace in their favorite pastime: roller skating. As they navigate grief, love, hustle and the underbelly of the city threatening to pull them down, a skating competition with life-changing prize money offers a glimmer of hope. In a world where the rink is their escape and survival is a full-time job, they rely on sisterhood and skating to outrun their past and build something real. When all else fails, lace up and skate until you can’t skate anymore.

Ready to binge is Soulmates, the love child of Black Mirror scribe Will Bridges and Ted Lasso/Shrinking co-creator Brett Goldstein.

At the time of its 2020 debut, it was set 15 years into the future, when science has discovered a test that unequivocally tells you who your soulmate is. Each of the six episodes has a different cast and explores an entirely new story.

Sarah Snook (Succession), David Costabile (Billions), Malin Akerman (The Hunting Wives) and Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) star.

Critics generally liked it. “Well-performed, but frustratingly fleeting, Soulmates asks some interesting questions, but its anthology approach cuts any novel revelations short,” was the Rotten Tomatoes consensus.

“At its best, Soulmates is a slickly filmed, intriguing spin on the evergreen questions of commitment, monogamy and how well you can ever know another person,” The Guardian said.

“But too often Soulmates, co-created by Brett Goldstein …  ends up feeling like hollow echoes of Black Mirror.”

Also new to AMC+ is the S2 premiere of The Walking Dead: Dead City, which already has aired on Duke, and S1-4 of Braxton Family Values S1-4, a dated docuseries about singer/songwriter Toni Braxton and her four sisters striving to succeed in 2010s Atlanta.

New to Acorn TV is a movie-length Harry Wild mystery (November 24) and the Kiwi whodunit that aired on TVNZ 1 A Remarkable Place To Die (November 17).

Sister service Shudder is premiering S2 of serial killer V/H/S confessions The Creep Tapes (November 14) and S3 of drag artist contest The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Titans as well as the movies:

  • Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story (November 7), in which the sons of Abraham Van Helsing uncover the violent truths behind their father’s Dracula legacy
  • The Ugly Stepsister (November 17), a sinister twist on Cinderella about a brutal bid to be belle of the ball.
