It’s a big month for fans of UK whodunit Vera, which starts its penultimate run on Sky’s Vibe (8.30 Thursdays from September 4) four days ahead of the final season premiering on AMC+/Acorn TV.
S14 comprises two movie-length mysteries combining murderous intrigue with heart and soul:
Personal and professional collides like never before when the sudden prospect of promotion confronts Vera with a life-affecting change. What will this mean for Vera? And what does it mean for her team?
“Vera bows out in pitch perfect love letter to character – and leaves a lasting legacy,” Radio Times said while the Sydney Morning Herald dubbed it “a fitting tribute to a beloved character”.
“Brenda Blethyn gave us, for one last time, full-bore Vera,” The Telegraph said:
The temptation might have been to soften her at the end, to give her an emotional crescendo. Instead, Blethyn retreated further into the ornery detective’s core. The show has always had a habit of being a little heavy-handed, larding on the exposition and explanation as if worried we’d forget what was going on in the numerous ad breaks, but that couldn’t be said of Blethyn’s performance, which has always been a triumph of extraordinary ordinariness.
Also returning to AMC+ are part five of Love After Lockup S5 (September 4) and Ride with Norman Reedus (September 14), in which the Walking Dead star hits the road with Robert Patrick (Tulsa King), Kim Coates (The Walking Dead: Dead City) and Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds).
Making special appearances are Walking Dead alumni Scott Gimple, Melissa McBride and Greg Nicotero.
Nicotero also fronts Shudder’s new original series Guts & Glory (September 9), an unscripted, horror-based competition that thrusts players into an immersive horror experience full of unexpected challenges.
Expect it to blend the intensity of a horror film with the pressure of a survival game where contestants are confronted with their fears in various scenarios.
Movies new to Shudder include two original premieres — Night of the Reaper (September 19), House on Eden (September 26) — and library additions:
- Halloween (1978), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (September 1)
- Pabrik Gula (aka Sugar Mill) and Perewangan (September 22)
New to HIDIVE are Queen Millennia (September 2), Call of the Night S2 English dub (September 3) and Rock is a Lady’s Modesty English dub (September 17).
