New to AMC+ in March

AMC+ subscribers must be ruing their decision to snap up the streamer’s launch offer of a discounted year’s subscription with yet another month bereft of premieres looming.

While AMC+ secondary services Acorn TV and Shudder have newcomers that will start in March, AMC+, which should be the premium platform, has none.

Hopefully the appointment of a new CEO, Kristin Dolan, will help AMC+ to at last get its house in order after removing key titles and not premiering here the new series on its US service, like Witches of Mayfair, as part of a $US475 million write-down of content.

There may be clues about the future of its NZ (and Australian) operation when AMC Networks reports its fourth-quarter earnings results tomorrow (Friday US time).

In the meantime, here’s what the other services on AMC+ will be premiering in March:

Cardinal S1 and 2 (Acorn TV, March 6 and 27)

This is an outstanding Canadian procedural that originally aired here on the Rialto channel. Atmospheric and haunting, it’s based on the novels of Giles Blunt and focuses on odd-couple detectives investigating grisly abductions in the city of Algonquin Bay. With each case, the clock is always ticking as they race to save the next victims.

Bloodlands S1 (Acorn TV, March 27)

Another excellent crime drama (S2 is airing Sunday nights on TVNZ 1). James Nesbitt is at his best as a veteran cop who links a criminal’s car pulled from the sea to a notorious series of disappearances, including his own wife’s 20 years earlier — the chief suspect being a cop who moonlights as an assassin.

Deadline (S1, March 13)

Dunkirk’s James D’Arcy plays a filmmaker who gets romantically involved with the subject of his true-crime documentary: a femme fatale (Peaky Blinders’ Charlie Murphy) accused of murdering her husband in cold blood. The Times dubbed the four-part thriller “Channel 5’s answer to Basic Instinct“.

Spoonful of Sugar (Shudder, March 2)

Millicent is taking a semester off from her studies to concentrate on her thesis about children with severe allergies, which makes her the perfect person to take care of little Johnny, a sickly, mute child who suffers from every allergy under the sun. His overbearing mother, Rebecca, is an accomplished author who is focused on her latest book release, while his dissatisfied father, Jacob, spends sweaty, shirtless days toiling away on a carpentry project in the backyard.

Leave (Shudder, March 17)

As an infant, Hunter White was discovered abandoned in a New England cemetery. She was wrapped in a piece of cloth covered in satanic symbols, and around her neck hung a Wolf’s Cross pendant. Twenty years later, she is obsessed with finding out why she was abandoned and who her biological parents are.

The Unheard (Shudder, March 31)

After a young deaf woman undergoes experimental treatment to regain her hearing, she fears she is not alone while recovering at her family’s beach home – all while uncovering family secrets and experiencing psychological strife and auditory hallucinations.
