New to Blu: April 29-May 5 UPDATED

Sons of Anarchy’s sixth season at last is for sale here — eight months after its release in the US, where the seventh and final season has been available since February.

Universal Pictures NZ blames the delay on production issues and expects S7 to go on sale here in August/September.

The good news is S6 look even better than its predecessors.

“This digitally shot series continues to be wonderfully sharp, crisp and clear on Blu-ray, but I’d actually rate this season just a notch higher than some previous releases.

“Part of this is due to an increased ‘playfulness’ (if that’s the right word) on the part of the directors and DPs to play with tonal values and contrast.”

Extras include two commentaries and separate panel discussions of the season premiere and finale.

On the flip side, another 20th Century Fox series, Homeland, is having its fourth season released here ahead of the US.

St. Vincent arrives on Blu-ray with a heavenly 1080p transfer.

“The film-sourced presentation is excellent, revealing fine-tuned details, precise colours, and a light grain overlay.

“Textures are outstanding throughout, aided by top-notch clarity.”

“The movie isn’t particularly involving on a visual level, but it does have a decent sense of place and everything is captured with top-notch clarity.

“Flesh tones always look warm and natural, and depth is strong.”

“Digitally shot with a variety of Red Epic cameras, Exodus: Gods and Kings is an often breathtaking visual experience in high definition.

“The 3D presentation is often very impressive, but it’s also curiously restrained … There’s almost always significant depth of field, achieved both through placement of foreground objects but also by establishing clear planes within the frame, but there are very few if any typical ‘in your face’ elements, despite the opportunity for same in some of the battle sequences or scenes like the parting of the Red Sea.”
