New to Blu: April 3-9

Two top cable TV shows break out on Blu-ray this week.

The timing of Breaking Bad: The Complete Fourth Season couldn’t be better, given SoHo will launch season five next month.

Being able to see this sensational award-winner in HD isn’t the only reason to snap up the Blu-ray – it’s also packed with excellent and comprehensive extras.

“The only problems with the noteworthy video quality are minor compression flaws, the audio is engagingly dynamic and there are so many special features included that if you tried getting through the 13-episode season and all of the special features in one 24-hour period, you couldn’t – it’s too long.”

But not all critics were as impressed with the transfer.

“Grain is evident at times, but the image also often looks smoothed over and flat.

“Softness, lifeless details, and a generally pasty appearance compete with some stunning images, some very naturally-textured surfaces and faces, some organic and accurate film-like presentations.”

In any event, it will look pristine compared to its shabby SD presentation on Four.

Veep’s first season also “comes with a solid batch of bonus features” and a transfer that “looks flawless, though ultimately the evenly lit, single-camera style programme doesn’t offer much in the way of visual challenges.”

“HBO provides a DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack which matches the material nicely. Since this is a comedy, surround sound and LFE is fairly limited …

“But dialogue is anchored properly to the front soundstage and is never a problem to hear.”

Season three of Mrs Brown’s Boys rounds out the TV-on-Blu releases while fresh from the multiplex is Pitch Perfect, which “looks gorgeous” on disc.

“Shot on digital Arri cameras, the source looks pristine. The transfer takes full advantage, with vibrant colours and clear images.

“From the first frame you’ll be impressed at this transfer’s sharp detail and glorious colours.”

“The audio is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The sound is exquisite with each and every musical number lovingly rendered.”

Bypassing cinemas are Trouble With the Curve and the re-make of Red Dawn.

The former’s “2.40:1 picture is sharp, vibrant, and immaculate and the 5.1 DTS-HD master audio is constantly crisp and supplies a nice amount of baseball atmosphere” while the latter has “stellar audio and video … Chalk this up as a bad flick, good disc scenario.”

Lastly, Aladdin, Ice Age 3 and The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader are being re-issued in 3D.

Just watched Pitch Perfect on Blu-ray and I’m beyond amazed by how incredible it looks, it’s SO clear and the colours are SO bright … my socks are well and truly knocked off and the movie is wonderful as well 🙂

  2. I imported Pitch Perfect from the US some time ago. I agree that it looks and sounds great and is a very enjoyable movie also.

  3. I think Pitch Perfect is by far the best looking Blu-ray I have bought so far, although The Hobbit is up there as well 🙂
