New to Blu: August 1-7

TV series dominate this week’s Blu-ray slate, with only Dr Seuss’ The Lorax being so fresh from the multiplex that its 2D and 3D discs go on sale here ahead of the US.

But it deserves to hog the limelight if advance online reviews about its demo-worthiness are a guide.

“Its 1080p/AVC-encoded jaw-dropper brushes perfection. The slightest hint of banding, intermittent though it may be, is the only thing that holds it back …

“Universal’s DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is a fun, fulfilling and wholly enveloping blast from sing-songy beginning to sweet, redemptive end.

“Voices are bright, clear and perfectly intelligible, and prioritisation is spot on.”

The only other theatrical release is a re-issue of the Transformers movies as a box-set trilogy.

Similarly, Downton Abbey, on the eve of season three’s premiere, is being repackaged in Blu-ray box sets of seasons one and two, and of season two and the Christmas special.

Also new are Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms, Planet Dinosaur (with the DVD bonus of How to Build a Dinosaur), the belated first four seasons of Dexter (ahead of season six’s SoHo premierein October), Bachman & Turner: Live at the Roseland Ballroom NYC and Peter Gabriel: Secret World.
