New to Blu: August 12 -18

Season one of Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys lands on Blu-ray with a “largely excellent HD rendition [that’s] decent enough to almost go toe-to-toe with Amazon’s streamed 4K equivalent,” AVForums says.

“Detail is impressively realised, and The Boys enjoys a fairly gritty look which translates very nicely to a top tier Blu-ray presentation, with grain intact and the well-integrated effects and, at times, almost film-standard shots looking extremely good …

“The Boys Season 1 Blu-ray enjoys a healthy and frequently impressive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which delivers the goods on all fronts, from dialogue to score to effects.”

Another series new to Blu-ray is Ghost Story/Circle Of Fear, which aired under two titles for one season in 1972/3 when Alfred Hitchcock-light anthology host Sebastian Cabot was hot off Family Affair.

The Via Vision release compiles 23 remastered episodes over five discs, with guest stars as impressive as Jason Robards, Gena Rowlands, Jodie Foster, Martin Sheen, Patty Duke and Angie Dickinson.

Also new are a nine-movie Friday the 13th collection and The Iron Mask. Says AVForums of the latter:

The colours are quite striking at times (some odd glowing green and yellow hues to the period environments give it a strange vibe, rather than perhaps the mystical, magical one they were going for), whilst the lightning effects look like Big Trouble in Little China 2020. Still, colours pop with vibrance (in particular Arnie’s ridiculous attire) and black levels are strong enough, leaving the presentation harder to fault than the film itself.
